People power poll results

Posted by | Posted in poll results | Posted on 06-08-2010

Earlier this week we ran a poll in response to claims public referendums on proposed council tax increases could put “unmanageable” strain on councils.

We asked: “Do you agree with the Government that any proposed council tax increase above a level set by Parliament should trigger a referendum of local voters?”

53 per cent of voters agreed; 46 per cent disagreed; 1 per cent were uncertain.

Thanks to everyone who voted.

Changes to our online sports content explained

Posted by | Posted in today on this is hull ... | Posted on 06-08-2010

Sports fans will have noticed changes to our website over the past few days.

Content that was previously on SportHull is now part of our main This is Hull and East Riding site.

We took the decision to combine the sites after talking to users.

Since we launched the new-look This is Hull and East Riding in May, Hull City, Hull FC and Hull KR stories had been appearing on both sites. We soon found that about twice as many people were reading these stories on This is Hull and East Riding than on SportHull.

Users also told us they wanted to be able to comment on stories in one place, rather than across two sites.

With that in mind, we decided to move all our sports content to the main site and to close SportHull.

All the breaking news and popular content from SportHull can now be found at thisishullandeastriding/sport – and we’ve added some new features, such as an enhanced Big Match Live feature.

We’ll also be promoting many more interactive debates and polls, such as the ‘Pick your own Hull City team’ featured on the site over the past few days.

Should a statue of Larkin be put up at Paragon Station? Poll result

Posted by | Posted in poll results | Posted on 02-08-2010

A small majority of This is Hull and East Riding users think a life-size bronze statue of Philip Larkin should be put up on the Paragon Station concourse.

520 people voted in a poll which we ran after the statue plan was criticised by railway historian John Morfin. 53 per cent said the statue should be put up, with 47 per cent against the idea.

In another recent poll, we asked if it was right to scrap Hull’s early morning bus subsidy for over-60s and disabled people. Hull City Council has decided to axe the scheme in order to save around £300,000 a year.

The vote was split 50/50, with a majority of just four out of 550 people saying the subsidy should have been kept.

We also asked last week if plans for a new Tesco supermarket at the junction of Anlaby and Boothferry Roads, west Hull, should be approved. 65 per cent of user said yes, 32 per cent no, with three per cent undecided. 348 people voted.

Huge welcome for toads … and other poll results

Posted by | Posted in today on this is hull ... | Posted on 20-07-2010

The city has welcomed the Larkin toads with open arms, the results of our latest poll show.

Of more than 500 people who voted, 75 per cent said yes to our question, “Now the toads are in place, do you like them?”.

Thanks to everyone who voted.

Other recent poll results:

  • Humberside Police want motorists speeding at up to 39mph in a 30mph zone to attend a Speed Awareness Course rather than receive fines. Do you agree with the move to educate more offenders and prosecute fewer? – Agree 74 per cent; disagree 25 per cent; Not sure 4 per cent. 684 votes.
  • Should Humber Bridge tolls be scrapped for motorcyclists? – Yes 65 per cent; No 35 per cent. 232 votes.
  • Should speed cameras be scrapped? - Yes 69 per cent; No 27 per cent; Not sure 4 per cent. 283 votes.

The Lincoln Castle in happier times

Posted by | Posted in today on this is hull ... | Posted on 02-07-2010

The news that the Lincoln Castle appears to be heading for the scrapheap will sadden all those who would like to see an important bit of Hull’s heritage preserved. The paddle steamer was the last of the River Humber ferries to be built before the construction of the Humber Bridge. Dating from 1940, it also played a role in the Second World War, transporting troops and supplies along the Humber. Later, when it was retired from ferry crossings, it became a pub near the Humber Bridge in the mid-80s.

Unfortunately, it seems soon the only way we will remember it is in videos like this one, posted on Youtube, showing a Paddle Steamer Preservation Society charter. More info from http://www.heritagesteamers.co.uk

Poll shows city split on whether we should have scrapped the big screen

Posted by | Posted in today on this is hull ... | Posted on 14-06-2010

A poll we held on Friday showed users of This is Hull and East Riding were split almost exactly down the middle on whether the council was right to scrap Hull’s big screen. We asked:

“Hull City Council leader Carl Minns last week defended scrapping Hull’s big screen in February because it was “a waste of taxpayers’ money”. We asked you, with many cities showing World Cup games on big screens, was it was right to get rid of ours?”

49 per cent said  – ”Yes: We were right to scrap the big screen”;

But 51 per cent said  – ”No: We should have a big screen for the World Cup”.

Read the story here.

In another recent poll we asked whether a new initiative called Half Past the Weekend, to bring live music to the Princes Quay area, would encourage people to spend more evenings in Hull city centre. We asked:

“The Half Past The Weekend campaign features live music, discounts and vouchers. Will you spend more evenings in Hull city centre as a result?”

42 per cent said they would definitely spend more evenings in the city centre;

25 per cent said they would give it a go;

13 per cent said the campaign would make no difference to where they chose to go out;

20 per cent said they’d never go out in the city centre.

Thanks for voting – look out for more polls on This is Hull and East Riding.

England will run away with World Cup, according to our users

Posted by | Posted in today on this is hull ... | Posted on 09-06-2010

England are by far and away the favourites to win the World Cup, according to users of This is Hull and East Riding who voted in our online poll.

Despite the stuttering form of Fabio Capello’s team, and the injury blow to captain Rio Ferdinand,  28 per cent of voters thought Wayne Rooney and co had what it takes to bring back the trophy.

Bookies’ favourites Spain polled second, with 21 per cent of the vote, with South American giants Argentina (13 per cent) and Brazil (10 per cent) trailing in third and fifth. Holland finished fourth with 11 per cent.

Portugal and Ivory Coast could be dark horses with seven per cent and four per cent of the vote, but 2006 winners Italy were considered such outsiders they didn’t receive a single vote.

We have daily news updates and a stats service from the World Cup.
